The Holocaust
The Holocaust, which began in 1933, was an attempt to exterminate the entire Jewish population and create a master race. The Holocaust lasted until 1945. The mastermind behind this horrible plan was Adolf Hitler.
Adolf Hitler was born April 20, 1889 in the small Austrian village of Braunau Am Inn. He was the leader of the Nazi group, and enforced anti-Semitism, or hatred of Jews. Hitler passed the Nuremberg Laws, which deprived Jews of most of their rights, and started pogroms, which was organized violence against Jews.
The Holocaust mainly began on November 8, 1938 on the Night of Broken Glass, otherwise known as kristallnacht. On this night, the Germans killed 100 Jewish people, and arrested 30,000. The Germans destroyed 250 Jewish synagogues, hundreds of businesses, homes, and anything else that was made of glass. This night was meant to make all of the Jews leave Germany, since Hitler did not want them there.
After the Night of Broken Glass did not work and all of the Jewish people were not leaving Germany, Hitler came up with another idea. He decided that he was going to force all of the Jews into small areas, called ghettos, where they would live. The ghettos were horrible places to live, because they were very dirty, small, and too many people were living in them. Hitler hoped that by putting so many Jews in such small areas that they would all die from disease and sickness that they would catch from one another.
After Hitler realized that putting Jewish people in ghettos would not kill them, he came up with another plan; concentration camps. These camps were horrible places. Jewish people were put on these camps and worked until they died. They barely got any food, and the living spaces were crammed and dirty. On this camp, Jews were forced to work 20 hours a day, with no food. They were basically digging their own graves. They would get beaten and killed, for no reason. Thousands were gassed to death in gas chambers, and the rest died of either being shot, beaten, or because of the lack of nutrients and the excessive physical labor they had to do.
The last part of the Holocaust was the Final Solution. This was Hitler's last push to kill as many Jews in the concentration camps as possible. They began gassing more and more people, and shooting everyone. Hitler killed everybody; males, females, children, the elderly, he just did not care. Hitler wanted every single Jew to die, and that was the purpose of the Holocaust and the Final Solution.
During the Holocaust, Hitler killed 6 million Jewish people and 5 million non-Jewish citizens.
